Southern Tasmanian Divers offer the PADI Open Water Diver course – the world’s most popular entry-level diving certificate. Its successful completion qualifies you to dive independently to a maximum depth of 18 metres (60 feet). PADI is the world’s largest dive training agency. Your Open Water certificate will be recognised throughout the world.

What is involved?

The course is divided into three parts:

  • Knowledge development, including quizzes and a multiple-choice exam where you learn the basic principles and procedures involved in going underwater.

It is also possible to take this theoretical part of the course online through the PADI eLearning system.
    PADI eLearning

  • A session in the swimming pool where you will learn and practice basic scuba skills, and will familiarize yourself with scuba equipment.
  • As the final part of your training you will complete six ocean dives at local dive sites, including two boat dives at Eaglehawk Neck.

How much does it cost?

The course price is $545. This includes:

  • Tuition, including pool and certification fees
  • PADI crew pack, including the PADI Open Water Manual. These are excellent reference materials for you to keep and to use after the course
  • Full equipment hire for the duration of the course
  • Your PADI certification

How much time do I need?

The PADI Open Water Diver Course is run over two weeks, with two theory nights each week and half day practical sessions on the weekends. Please see the calendar or contact us for start dates.

Where do we go?

The knowledge development portion of the course is conducted at the Dive Centre and we go to the pool for the confined water training.

The dive sites that we use for the open water dives are dependent on weather and sea conditions, although we generally use dives sites at Tinderbox, Coningham and Eaglehawk Neck.

What do I need to do?

You can book a place on the Open Water Course by contacting us and letting us know when you want to start. To secure your place, payment is made at the time of booking. Once payment has been received by us, you can collect your PADI crew pack, or we can send it out to you. There is some self-study for you to complete prior to starting the course.
