ssi open water diver course
The SSI Open Water Diver Course is the world’s most popular entry-level dive certification. It qualifies you to dive independently to a maximum depth of 18 metres (60 feet). SSI is the world’s largest dive training agency. Your Open Water Certificate will be recognised throughout the world.
What is involved?
The course is divided into three parts:
- Knowledge development, including quizzes and a multiple-choice exam where you learn the basic principles and procedures involved in going underwater. These theory sessions are held over four evenings in our training room here at the shop.
- A session in the swimming pool where you will learn and practice basic scuba skills, and will familiarize yourself with scuba equipment.
- Six ocean dives at local dive sites, including two boat dives at Eaglehawk Neck.
How much does it cost?
Our regular Open Water course price is $545. This includes:
- Tuition, including pool and certification fees
- SSI crew pack, including the SSI Open Water Manual. These are excellent reference materials for you to keep and to use after the course
- Full equipment hire for the duration of the course
- Your SSI certification
How much time do I need?
The SSI Open Water Diver Course is run over two weekends. We will do one short evening before the start of your course for registration and introduction to theory.
Over the two weekends you will complete three practical sessions – including pool and ocean dives – during the mornings, and three theory sessions here at the shop in the afternoons.
As the final part of your course you will spend a day at Eaglehawk Neck on the Tasman Peninsula, completing two boat dives at world famous dive sites such as Fortescue Bay or Waterfall Bay.
Please see the calendar or contact us for start dates.
Where do we go?
The knowledge development portion of the course is conducted at the Dive Centre and we go to the pool for the confined water training.
The dive sites that we use for the open water dives are dependent on weather and sea conditions, although we generally use dives sites at Tinderbox, Coningham and Eaglehawk Neck.
What do I need to do?
You can book a place on the Open Water Course by contacting us and letting us know when you want to start. To secure your place, payment is made at the time of booking. Once payment has been received by us, you can collect your SSI crew pack, or we can send it out to you. There is some self-study for you to complete prior to starting the course.
